Appointments are required and are available at 7:30, 8, 10 and 10:30 a.m., and at 12:30, 1 and 2:30 p.m. throughout the drive, along with 6 a.m. Friday.

The collection process takes two to three hours.

Appointments to donate platelets can be made by calling (323) 361-2441 or emailing blooddonorcenter@chla.usc.edu.

All donors will be entered into a drawing to win two tickets for Game 6 (if necessary) of the Kings’ conference quarterfinal series against the St. Louis Blues May 10 at Staples Center.

One donor will also win a Kings game-used autographed stick.

Platelets are the cells in blood that help to form a clot and avoid bleeding.

Patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatment and those having a bone marrow transplant have especially low platelet counts and can bleed very easily.

Platelet donations are in great demand for children undergoing these processes.

What was dubbed as “Platelets For Playoffs” was also held last year during the Kings’ triumphant run to the Stanley Cup, with 156 fans donating platelets, according to Aileen Jenkins, the supervisor of the hospital’s Blood Donor Center.

“With the number of platelets donated by Kings fans, we were able to help over 300 children who have bone marrow disease, leukemia and other cancers,” Jenkins said.
